Roof Pitch Calculator

Enter vertical rise and horizontal run to calculate slope, pitch ratio, degrees, and multipliers.

Vertical height gained from the bottom of the rafter to the ridge.

Horizontal distance used to measure slope (standardized at 12 in common notation).

How Roof Pitch Is Calculated

Roof pitch represents the steepness of a roof slope expressed as the vertical rise (height gained) over a horizontal run of 12 units (inches or feet). For example, a roof that rises 4 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run is classified as a 4/12 pitch.

Mathematical Formulas

Pitch Ratio (X/12) = (Rise / Run) × 12

Roof Angle (θ) = arctan(Rise / Run) × (180 / π)

Slope Percentage (%) = (Rise / Run) × 100

Pitch Multiplier = √(1 + (Rise / Run)²) = √(Rise² + Run²) / Run

Worked Calculation Example

Example: Rise = 4 inches, Run = 12 inches

  1. Slope Ratio: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333
  2. Pitch Ratio: 0.3333 × 12 = 4/12 pitch
  3. Roof Angle: arctan(0.3333) × (180 / π) = 18.43°
  4. Slope Grade: 0.3333 × 100 = 33.33%
  5. Pitch Multiplier: √(1 + 0.3333²) = √(1.1111) = 1.054

Application: To find the true rafter length for a 12-foot horizontal run, multiply the run by the pitch multiplier: 12 ft × 1.054 = 12.65 ft.

How to Measure Rise and Run

To calculate roof pitch accurately, you can measure rise and run using one of three standard methods:

  • From the Attic Rafters: Place a 12-inch level horizontally against the underside of a roof rafter. Measure vertically from the 12-inch end of the level up to the rafter bottom. That vertical measurement in inches is your rise per 12 inches of run.
  • From the Roof Surface: Place a 12-inch level flat and horizontally on the roof surface. Measure the vertical distance from the free end of the level straight down to the shingles.
  • From Architectural Plans: Take total building rise (height from top plate to ridge) and divide by the total horizontal run (half of the building span).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a 4/12 roof pitch mean?

A 4/12 roof pitch means the roof rises 4 inches vertically for every 12 inches (1 foot) of horizontal run. This creates an angle of approximately 18.43 degrees and a slope grade of 33.33%.

How do you calculate roof pitch from rise and run?

Divide the vertical rise by the horizontal run, then multiply by 12: Pitch X = (Rise / Run) × 12. For example, if rise is 6 feet and run is 12 feet, (6 / 12) × 12 = 6, which is a 6/12 pitch.

How do you convert roof pitch to degrees?

Divide rise by run (or divide the pitch number by 12), take the arctangent, and convert radians to degrees: Degrees = arctan(Rise / Run) × (180 / π). A 6/12 pitch equals arctan(6/12) × (180 / π) = 26.57°.

What is a roof pitch multiplier?

A pitch multiplier (or slope factor) is the ratio of true sloped rafter length to horizontal run: Multiplier = √(1 + (Rise / Run)²). Multiplying your horizontal building footprint area by the pitch multiplier calculates the true surface area of the roof.

Does roof pitch change when using feet or meters instead of inches?

No. Roof pitch is a dimensionless geometric ratio. As long as rise and run are measured in the same unit (e.g. inches to inches, feet to feet, or meters to meters), the calculated pitch ratio, degrees, and multipliers remain identical.
