3-tab shingles are traditional single-layer asphalt strip shingles featuring three uniform tabs cut into each shingle piece. As the most economical roofing option on the market, 3-tab shingles cost $3.50 to $5.50 per square foot installed with an expected lifespan of 15 to 20 years.
3-Tab Shingles at a Glance
Installed Cost: $3.50 to $5.50 per sq ft ($350 to $550 per square)
Average Lifespan: 15 to 20 years
Wind Warranty: 60 to 70 mph

Design and Construction
Each 3-tab shingle measures approximately 36 inches long by 12 inches wide with two vertical cutouts creating three equal 12-inch tabs. When installed in overlapping horizontal courses, 3-tab shingles produce a flat, uniform brick-like grid pattern across the roof.
Advantages and Disadvantages
- Pros: Lowest initial installation cost; lightweight construction (safe for older structures with minimal framing); straightforward DIY installation.
- Cons: Lower wind resistance (60–70 mph, making them vulnerable in hurricane and severe storm regions); shorter lifespan; flat aesthetic with lower curb appeal than architectural shingles.
When Does Choosing 3-Tab Shingles Make Sense?
3-tab shingles remain an excellent choice for budget-conscious homeowners, rental properties, detached garages, sheds, and homes in regions with mild weather that do not experience high-velocity wind storms.
