ROOF AREA & PITCH UTILITY
Roof Square Footage Calculator
Calculate true sloped roof surface area and roofing squares from building footprint dimensions, overhangs, and roof pitch multiplier.
Roof Square Footage Calculator
Calculate true sloped roof surface area and roofing squares from building footprint and roof pitch.
Standard residential overhang is 12 inches (1 ft). Set to 0 if dimensions already include eaves.
How Roof Square Footage Is Calculated
Because a roof slopes upward, its true surface area is always greater than the flat ground footprint beneath it. To calculate true roof surface area, find the building footprint including overhangs, then multiply by the geometric pitch multiplier (slope factor).
Formulas
Adjusted Length = Building Length + (2 × Rake Overhang ÷ 12)
Adjusted Width = Building Width + (2 × Eave Overhang ÷ 12)
Pitch Multiplier = √(1 + (Pitch / 12)²)
Roof Surface Area = Adjusted Length × Adjusted Width × Pitch Multiplier
Worked Example
Example: 40 ft × 30 ft building with 12″ overhangs and 6/12 pitch
- Adjusted Dimensions: (40 + 2) ft × (30 + 2) ft = 42 ft × 32 ft = 1,344 sq ft footprint
- Pitch Multiplier (6/12): √(1 + 0.5²) = √(1.25) = 1.118
- True Roof Surface Area: 1,344 sq ft × 1.118 = 1,502.6 sq ft
- Roofing Squares: 1,502.6 ÷ 100 = 15.03 Squares

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you convert ground square footage to roof square footage?
Multiply the ground footprint area by the pitch multiplier. For example, a 2,000 sq ft flat footprint with a 4/12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.054, yielding 2,000 × 1.054 = 2,108 sq ft of roof area.
Why should I add overhangs to building dimensions?
Roof rafters extend past the exterior walls to create eave and rake overhangs, adding surface area that must be covered by shingles and underlayment.
Accuracy Notice
This calculator estimates roof surface area for simple gable roof geometries. Complex roofs with dormers, hips, and valleys require additional waste margin (10%–15%).
