Understanding Metal Panel Coverage Width
When calculating metal panels, always use the net coverage width (the usable width after panel seams overlap), not the nominal raw sheet width. Common coverage widths:
- 36 inches (3 ft): Corrugated, Tough-Rib, R-Panel, and agricultural exposed-fastener panels.
- 16 inches (1.33 ft): Standard residential standing seam hidden-fastener panels.
- 12 inches (1 ft): Architectural standing seam panels.
Panel Formulas
Panels Per Side = ⌈Eave Length ÷ (Coverage Width ÷ 12)⌉
Total Panels (Gable) = Panels Per Side × 2
Total Linear Footage = Total Panels × Slope Length
