Shingle Calculator
Calculate required shingle bundles, roofing squares, and waste allowances for any roof size.
Standard gable roofs use 10%. Complex roofs with hips, valleys, and dormers typically require 15%.
Standard architectural & 3-tab shingles are packaged 3 bundles per square (33.3 sq ft/bundle).
How Shingle Quantities Are Calculated
Shingles are sold in bundles. For standard architectural and 3-tab asphalt shingles, 3 bundles cover 1 roofing square (100 sq ft). To ensure you do not run short during installation, always include a 10% to 15% waste factor for cuts, valleys, starter strips, and ridge caps.
Material Formulas
Adjusted Square Footage = Roof Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
Roofing Squares = Adjusted Square Footage ÷ 100
Total Bundles = ⌈Roofing Squares × Bundles Per Square⌉
Worked Example
Example: 2,000 sq ft roof with 10% waste
- Base Area: 2,000 sq ft (20 squares)
- Waste Allowance (10%): 2,000 × 1.10 = 2,200 sq ft (22 squares)
- Bundles Calculation: 22 squares × 3 bundles/sq = 66 Bundles
