STEP-BY-STEP MEASUREMENT GUIDE
How to Calculate Roof Square Footage: Formulas & Examples
Accurately calculating roof square footage requires measuring building dimensions, accounting for exterior eave overhangs, and multiplying by the roof pitch multiplier to determine true sloped surface area. Follow our step-by-step guide with worked formulas.
The Core Area Formula
$$text{Total Sloped Roof Area} = (text{Building Length} + text{Overhangs}) times (text{Building Width} + text{Overhangs}) times text{Pitch Multiplier}$$
Step 1: Measure the Ground Footprint (or Exterior Walls)
Measure the exterior length and width of your home using a 100-foot measuring tape or architectural floor plans. For an L-shaped or T-shaped home, split the building into separate rectangular sections.
Step 2: Add Eave & Rake Overhangs
Most residential roofs extend beyond the exterior walls by 12 to 24 inches (1 to 2 feet) on each side:
$$text{Adjusted Length} = text{Wall Length} + (2 times text{Overhang in Feet})$$
$$text{Adjusted Width} = text{Wall Width} + (2 times text{Overhang in Feet})$$
Step 3: Multiply by the Pitch Multiplier (Slope Factor)
Because the roof slopes upward, multiply the adjusted horizontal footprint by your roof’s pitch multiplier:
| Roof Pitch | Multiplier ($M$) | Roof Pitch | Multiplier ($M$) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3/12 | 1.031 | 7/12 | 1.158 |
| 4/12 | 1.054 | 8/12 | 1.202 |
| 5/12 | 1.083 | 9/12 | 1.250 |
| 6/12 | 1.118 | 12/12 | 1.414 |
Step-by-Step Worked Example
Suppose your home has an exterior wall footprint of $48text{ ft} times 32text{ ft}$, a $12text{-inch}$ ($1text{ ft}$) perimeter overhang, and a $6/12$ roof pitch:
- Adjusted Length: $48 + 1 + 1 = 50text{ ft}$.
- Adjusted Width: $32 + 1 + 1 = 34text{ ft}$.
- Adjusted Footprint: $50 times 34 = 1,700text{ sq ft}$.
- Apply 6/12 Multiplier: $1,700 times 1.118 = mathbf{1,900.6text{ sq ft}}$.
- Add 10% Waste Margin: $1,900.6 times 1.10 = mathbf{2,091text{ sq ft}}$ ($20.9text{ squares}$).
