How to Replace Roof Shingles: Step-by-Step Repair Guide

Replacing individual damaged, cracked, or wind-blown shingles is an effective way to restore watertight protection and prevent minor roof leaks from causing widespread wood rot. Learn how to remove damaged shingles safely without tearing surrounding tabs.

When is an Isolated Shingle Repair Appropriate?

Replacing individual shingles is recommended when damage is limited to 1 to 5 isolated shingles caused by falling tree branches or localized wind blow-off on a roof that is under 15 to 18 years old with flexible, pliable shingles.

Required Tools & Materials

  • Matching replacement asphalt shingles (3-tab or architectural).
  • Flat roofing pry bar (slate ripper or wonder bar).
  • Hammer & 1-1/4 inch galvanized roofing nails.
  • Tube of asphalt roofing cement / mastic & caulking gun.

Step-by-Step Shingle Replacement Procedure

  1. Break the Adhesive Seal: Gently slide the flat pry bar underneath the damaged shingle tab to break the thermal seal strip bonding it to the course below.
  2. Loosen the Course Above: Lift the tabs of the shingles in the course directly above the damaged shingle. Nails from the damaged shingle pass through the top edge beneath this upper layer.
  3. Extract the Fasteners: Slide the pry bar under each nail head holding the damaged shingle, gently levering the nail upward. Remove all 4 to 6 nails.
  4. Slide Out the Damaged Shingle: Carefully pull the torn or cracked shingle downward out of the roof matrix.
  5. Insert the Replacement Shingle: Slide the new shingle into place, aligning its bottom edge perfectly flush with the adjacent shingles in the course.
  6. Fasten with New Roofing Nails: Lift the overlying tab and drive new 1-1/4″ roofing nails through the manufacturer nail strip, spacing nails 1/2 inch away from the old nail holes.
  7. Hand-Seal the Tabs: Apply quarter-sized dabs of roofing cement underneath each lifted shingle tab and press down firmly to secure the wind seal.
