Metal Roofing Panels: Types, Gauges & Profiles Guide
Metal roofing panels are engineered in multiple distinct profiles, metal gauges, and fastening methods. Understanding the differences between concealed-fastener standing seam panels and through-fastened corrugated sheets is essential for matching your roof pitch, budget, and architectural requirements.
The Two Fundamental Panel Categories
- Concealed-Fastener Panels (Standing Seam): Panels interlock over hidden clips with raised vertical seams ($1.5″$ to $2″$). Fasteners are protected from weather, permitting thermal expansion and 50+ year lifespans.
- Exposed-Fastener Panels (Corrugated / Ribbed): Panels overlap and are screwed directly through the face into the roof decking with rubber-washer screws. Economical, but requires screw replacement every 15–20 years.
Major Metal Roofing Panel Profiles
| Panel Profile | Fastener Type | Standard Coverage Width | Common Steel Gauge | Minimum Pitch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standing Seam (Snap-Lock) | Concealed Clips | 16″ or 12″ | 24 or 26-Gauge | 2:12 to 3:12 |
| Standing Seam (Mechanical Double Lock) | Concealed Clips | 16″ or 18″ | 24-Gauge | 1/2:12 (w/ sealant) |
| Corrugated (Classical Wave) | Exposed Screws | 24″ or 36″ | 26 or 29-Gauge | 3:12 |
| R-Panel / PBR-Panel | Exposed Screws | 36″ | 26-Gauge | 1:12 to 3:12 (w/ butyl) |
| 5V-Crimp | Exposed Screws | 24″ | 26-Gauge | 3:12 |
Understanding Metal Gauges (Thickness)
In metal roofing, lower gauge numbers denote thicker steel:
- 24-Gauge ($0.024″$ thick): The commercial and high-end residential benchmark. Maximizes structural rigidity and eliminates “oil-canning” surface ripples.
- 26-Gauge ($0.018″$ thick): Standard residential grade. Balances affordability with solid hail impact resistance.
- 29-Gauge ($0.014″$ thick): Economy agricultural grade. Suitable for barns, sheds, and utility structures.
