STEP-BY-STEP MEASUREMENT GUIDE
How to Calculate Roof Pitch: 3 Simple & Safe Methods
Learn how to calculate roof pitch using simple tools you already own. We explain three practical methods: measuring inside the attic, measuring from a ladder, and measuring from the roof surface, complete with formulas and worked examples.
Safety First
Warning: Measuring pitch from the attic rafters or gable end from a ladder is significantly safer than walking on an elevated roof surface. If measuring from a roof, always wear slip-resistant footwear and fall-protection equipment on slopes of 6/12 or greater.
Method 1: Measuring from Inside the Attic (Safest Method)
Measuring from the attic avoids roof climbing entirely and gives precise framing rafter pitch:
- Gather tools: A 12-inch carpenter’s level, a tape measure, and a pencil.
- Place level horizontally: Place one end of the 12-inch level against the bottom edge of a common rafter. Hold the level until the bubble centers.
- Measure the vertical rise: Using your tape measure, measure straight up from the 12-inch mark on the level to the underside of the rafter.
- Read the pitch: If the tape measures 6 inches at the 12-inch level mark, your roof pitch is 6/12.
Method 2: Measuring from a Ladder at the Eave / Gable End
If your attic is inaccessible or finished, you can measure from the gable rake edge using a ladder:
- Set your ladder securely against the gable wall or eave edge.
- Place the end of a 12-inch level against the sloping roof edge or fascia.
- Hold the level horizontal (bubble centered) and measure the vertical gap from the 12-inch mark down to the roof surface.
- The measurement in inches represents your rise over 12.
Method 3: Calculating Pitch from Total Building Dimensions
If you know your building’s total horizontal span (width) and the roof peak height (rise):
$$text{Pitch (Rise per Foot)} = left(frac{text{Peak Rise (in)}}{text{Half-Span (ft)}}right)$$
Example: A building with a 30-foot span has a half-span (run) of 15 feet. If the peak rises 7.5 feet (90 inches) above the wall plate:
$$text{Rise per Foot} = frac{90text{ in}}{15text{ ft}} = 6text{ inches} quad longrightarrow quad mathbf{6/12text{ Pitch}}$$

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a smartphone app to calculate roof pitch?
Yes. Smartphone level and clinometer apps measure the roof angle in degrees directly. You can convert that angle to pitch using our Roof Pitch to Degrees Converter ($X = 12 times tan(theta)$).
What tools do I need to measure roof pitch?
All you need is a standard 12-inch spirit level (or 24-inch level with a 12-inch mark) and a tape measure.
