ARCHITECTURAL SHINGLE GUIDE

Dimensional Shingles: Features, Costs & Lifespan Guide

Dimensional shingles (also known as architectural or laminate shingles) are the most popular roofing material in North America, installed on over 80% of new residential roofs. Their multi-layer construction delivers superior durability, high wind ratings (up to 130 mph), and rich textured aesthetics.

Dimensional Shingles at a Glance

Installed Cost: $4.50 to $7.50 per sq ft ($450 to $750 per square)
Expected Lifespan: 22 to 28 years (under proper ventilation)
Wind Warranty: 110 to 130 mph
Packaging: Standard 3 bundles per square (covers 100 sq ft)

How Dimensional Shingles Are Constructed

Unlike flat, single-layer 3-tab shingles, dimensional shingles are manufactured by laminating two separate fiberglass-asphalt sheets together. The top layer features random sawtooth cutouts, exposing the darker underlayer to create shadow lines and depth that mimic natural cedar shakes.

Advantages of Dimensional Shingles

  • Superior Wind Resistance: Laminated construction and heavy-duty sealant strips provide resistance against winds up to 130 mph (compared to 60–70 mph for 3-tab).
  • Enhanced Curb Appeal: Distinct shadow lines add texture and depth, increasing home resale value.
  • Extended Service Life: Thicker fiberglass mats resist weathering, blistering, and thermal cycling, lasting 7 to 10 years longer than 3-tab shingles.
  • Class A Fire Rating: Fiberglass core provides the highest residential fire resistance rating available.
