How Many Bundles of Shingles in a Square? Standard Rules

For standard architectural laminate and 3-tab asphalt shingles, there are exactly 3 bundles in one roofing square. One square equals 100 square feet of roof area, meaning each individual bundle provides approximately 33.3 square feet of installed coverage.

The Standard Bundle Rule

$$mathbf{3text{ Bundles} = 1text{ Roofing Square} = 100text{ Square Feet}}$$

$$text{Total Bundles Needed} = (text{Roofing Squares} times 3) + text{Waste Allowance}$$

When Do Shingles Require 4 or 5 Bundles per Square?

While 90% of residential roofs use 3-bundle-per-square shingles, premium materials differ:

  • Standard Architectural Shingles (3 Bundles/Sq): GAF Timberline HDZ, Owens Corning Duration, CertainTeed Landmark, IKO Cambridge. Weight: ~210–240 lbs/square.
  • Heavyweight Luxury Shingles (4 to 5 Bundles/Sq): CertainTeed Grand Manor, GAF Camelot II, Owens Corning Berkshire. Due to extreme multi-layer thickness and weights exceeding 400 lbs/square, manufacturers split squares into 4 or 5 lighter bundles.

Do Starter Strips & Ridge Caps Count as Regular Bundles?

No. Starter strips and hip & ridge cap shingles must be ordered separately from your main field shingles. Starter bundles provide ~100 to 120 linear feet of eave/rake protection, while specialized cap bundles cover ~25 to 33 linear feet of ridges and hips.
